Details

This is one of a six part series of programs aimed at helping heart attack survivors make necessary lifestyle changes. It is made up of interviews with actual patients from across the United States and is hosted by Murray Rubin, himself a heart attack survivor.

Changing your eating habits to reduce fat and cholesterol is one of the most important, and hardest, parts of the lifestyle changes after a heart attack.

The goal is to:

  • eat less red meat, eggs, cheese and other high fat foods
  • eat more fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables and grains
  • eat more fiber as fiber helps lower your cholesterol

Try:

  • low fat cookbooks
  • serving from the kitchen, not at the table
  • seasonings can help make low fat food taste better
  • enlist the help of your family

Benefits:

  • lower your cholesterol
  • lose weight

Make sure your expectations are realistic.

It's okay to give in to an occasional craving, just don't let it be an excuse to let your eating get out of control.

Eating out:

  • watch out for extra large portions
  • get dressings on the side
