This program covers activity guidelines for the first four to six weeks after your release from the hospital following a heart attack or open heart surgery.
Week One Activity Guidelines:
- get up and get dressed daily
- bathing
- showering
- walking
- lifing less than 10 pounds
- no dinner parties or special events
- short car rides and visits
- how to take your pulse and why it's important
- during recovery keep your heart rate during activity within 20 beats of your resting heart rate
- symptoms of overexertion include: chest discomfort, angina, shortness of breath, faintness, heart palpitations, irregular pulse, excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea, excessive fatigue
- showering: wait 60-90 mins after eating, exercise or emotional upset; lukewarm water only; support arm when washing above shoulders; follow instructions for incision care; limit to 5-7 minutes; sit to dry off
Week Two Activity Guidelines:
- light housekeeping: work between shoulder and knee level, no pushing or pulling furniture; no vacuuming
- light laundry chores
- grocery shopping: avoid heavy reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling
- symptoms of depression:
- loss of appetite
- problems with sleep
- not dressing
- not bathing
Weeks Three - Five Activity Guidelines:
- visit mall, see a movie, attend religious services
- begin driving with doctor's okay
- sexual activity: you are ready if you can climb two flights of stairs without stopping or do your daily activities without difficulty
- guidelines for sexual activity: wait 60-90 minutes after consuming alcohol, emotional upset or strenuous activity; relax; be with a familiar partner; use comfortable positions
Week Six Activity Guidelines:
- lift more than ten pounds
- mopping,scrubbing and vacuuming (one room per day)
- light gardening
- light carpentry or car maintenance
- long car rides
- light weight fishing
- golf (putting)
