New Diabetes Patient Education DVD Releases From Milner-Fenwick Guide Patients Through Healthy Lifestyle Changes
Two key Diabetes patient education DVD releases from Milner-Fenwick , a leader in health education and wellness multimedia publishing, are new for 2011, in an effort to stem the widespread $218 billion disease.
(Hunt Valley, MD) March 28, 2011 -- Prediabetes and Diabetes and Exercise are major updates to earlier DVD versions from Milner-Fenwick patient education publishers. The new releases were completed in order to offer the best and most current information to physicians, hospitals and patients in the patient continuum of care. Diabetes is a widespread and chronic disease in the United States. According to the CDC, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and that number is steadily climbing.*
The videos are favorably reviewed by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the national non-profit organization of over 10,000 multidisciplinary healthcare professionals dedicated to integrating self-management as a key outcome in the care of people with diabetes and related chronic conditions.* The titles are peer reviewed for medical accuracy and ethnic diversity appropriate to the demographic.
Pre-Diabetes zeros in on risk reduction, highlighting the ability of patients to lower their chances of developing type 2 Diabetes by 58% through basic lifestyle changes in nutrition, exercise, and proper medication when necessary. This positive and encouraging production follows patients in their quest to remain healthy, offering information on the condition, easily implemented treatments and support to make the necessary changes in a meaningful, realistic way. Duration 19:31
Type 2 Diabetes and Exercise helps motivate people with diabetes to get active. It explains the benefits of exercise including improved blood glucose levels, weight loss, increased energy, and general wellbeing. Different types of exercise, how to create an exercise plan, and how to exercise safely, are also discussed. A separate chapter on Hypoglycemia covers the causes, symptoms and how patients should treat it. Duration 19:46, Hypoglycemia Chapter 5:25
These two DVDs like other programs in the Milner-Fenwick Diabetes Library will help to alleviate patient uncertainty and fear, and provide a better understanding for the patient about their role in their Diabetes treatment plan. They also provide support to Health Care Providers and help patients better manage their conditions.
Diabetes education, also known as diabetes self-management training (DSMT) or diabetes self-management education (DSME), is defined by the AADE as “a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions.” DSME is considered a critical component to achieving optimal health status, better quality of life and reducing the need for costly healthcare. *
The disease is on an upward trend with the CDC projecting that as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue. Type 2 diabetes, where the body loses its ability over time to use and produce insulin, constitutes 90 percent to 95 percent of diabetes cases. A serious condition, Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. People with diabetes are more likely to suffer from complications such as heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, blindness and amputations of feet and legs.*
Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, family history, having diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), a sedentary lifestyle, and race/ethnicity. Groups at higher risk for the disease are African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and some Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.*
Proper nutrition and exercise are the best means to prevent and delay Type 2 Diabetes. “These distressing numbers [statistics] show how important it is to prevent type 2 diabetes and to help those who have diabetes manage the disease to prevent serious complications… We know that a structured lifestyle program that includes losing weight and increasing physical activity can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.” said Ann Albright, Ph.D., R.D., director of CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation (/diabetes/) in a CDC press release.*
The American Diabetes Association reports the cost of Diabetes in the United States as $218 billion. *
