Diabetes: The Basics
The public health burden of diabetes and its complications in the United States exceeds $245 billion.
Over the past 32 years, from 1980 through 2012, the number of adults with diagnosed diabetes in the United States nearly quadrupled, from 5.5 million to 21.3 million. Among adults, about 1.7 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year. According to the CDC, if this trend continues, as many as 1 out of every 3 adults in the United States could have diabetes by 2050.
