The Gastroenterology Teaching Project

Development of the Human GI System

UTP 35       83 slides        $100

This unit describes the development of form and function in the human gastrointestinal system from the time of conception until birth. Basic principles and molecular mechanisms underlying the processes of gastrointestinal development are presented. Sections are devoted to the early development, morphogenesis of the gastrointestinal tract, development of the liver, pancreas, immune system, and enteric nervous system, motility, and gastrointestinal hormones, as well as post-natal development of digestive function. Examples of congenital anomalies resulting from aberrant development are presented, and their pathophysiology discussed in the context of the developmental state at which they occur.
