The Biliary Tract: Bile Formation and Gallbladder Function

UTP 27        98 slides        $135

Broad in scope, this unit presents state-of-the-art concepts and data for bile formation and gallbladder function. It is divided into 8 sections: 1) overview of functions; 2) schematic anatomy of structures involved in bile formation; 3) functional anatomy; 4) bile composition; 5) bile formation; 6) cholestasis; 7) biliary lipids; and 8) gallbladder function. Slides are concept-oriented and provide a sound basis for understanding those forces which generate bile flow and determine its composition, including osmotic forces generated by solute secretion, permeability of tight junctions, and the influence of cellular function on bile compostion along the various portions of the biliary tract. Detailed physicochemical, biochemical, and physiological concepts are presented to provide a balanced view for understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of the biliary tract. Whenever possible, concepts are illustrated by human data. Thirty-three slides are devoted to mucosal and motor function of the gallbladder. There are 133 references in this unit.
