This unit focuses on neurobiology of the enteric nervous systems. It covers histoanatomy, localization of neurotransmitters and the basics of electrophysiological study of enteric neurons, and illustrated neuronal electrical behavior and synaptic mechanism. The "little brain" concept is then introduced in presentation of interactions between the enteric and central nervous systems. Finally, the unit demonstrates the pathophysiological consequences of nervous malfunction and explains the interplay between the "big" brain in the head and the "little" brain in the gut.
