This teaching unit correlates pathologic findings in the upper gastrointestinal tract with the underlying pathophysiological processes. Endoscopic appearance of important lesions are coupled with the histopathology to increase the understanding of the contributions and limitations of the gross (endoscopic) appearances of upper gastrointestinal lesions to the diagnosis and understanding of the associated disorders. The esophageal section emphasizes inflammation of the esophagus, its causes and appearance with particular attention to gastroesophageal reflux and its complications, especially those relating to Barrett's esophagus. The gastroduodenal section details the evolution of Helicobacter pylori infection and its progression and/or contributions to the pathogenesis of serious disorders such as peptic ulcer disease and gastric neoplasia.
