This slide unit reviews the epidemiology, physiology, pathophysiology, psychosocial features, diagnosis, and treatment approach to the irritable bowel syndrome. An emphasis is placed on an integrated approach in which an understanding of the disorder is determined by physiologic factors, including enhanced intestinal motility and visceral hyperalgesia, psychosocial factors, including life stress and psychosocial disturbance. A treatment approach based on an appreciation of the severity of the condition is emphasized.
